Team GB's athletics squad has completed its final preparation camp at a training base in Portugal and is now en route to Tokyo for the World Athletics Championships, which begin on 19 July 2026.
The 72-strong squad represents one of the largest teams GB has ever sent to a global outdoor championships, with genuine medal contenders across track, field, and combined events.
Sprinting Strength
The sprint programme is in its strongest position in years. Keely Hodgkinson remains the standout medal hope in the women's 800 metres, having dominated the European circuit this season with a personal best of 1:55.2. The men's 4x100m relay team, silver medallists at the previous championships, has been bolstered by the emergence of two promising young runners.
Dina Asher-Smith, competing in what may be her final World Championships, is targeting medals in both the 100 metres and 200 metres. Her form this season has been consistent, with several sub-11-second performances suggesting she is peaking at the right time.
Field Event Prospects
The field events offer some of Team GB's strongest medal chances. Molly Caudery, the reigning European pole vault champion, has cleared 4.85m this season and is considered a genuine contender for gold. In the throws, the men's hammer and women's discus teams have both recorded world-class marks.
The long jump and triple jump squads have shown encouraging form, with several athletes posting season's bests during the preparation phase. Katarina Johnson-Thompson, returning from injury, will compete in the heptathlon in what would be a remarkable comeback story.
Middle and Long Distance
The distance programme faces a mixed outlook. Josh Kerr, the world 1500m champion from 2023, remains a leading contender despite a disrupted preparation. Jake Wightman has been ruled out through injury, a significant blow to the middle-distance programme.
The marathon squad has been selected based on performances in the spring marathons, with three debutants at championship level. The conditions in Tokyo, potentially hot and humid, will present a significant challenge for the long-distance events.
Coaching and Strategy
Head coach Paula Dunn has emphasised that the team's approach focuses on consistency and execution. We are not setting specific medal targets, she said. "We want every athlete to perform to their potential on the day. If they do that, the medals will take care of themselves."
The team has benefited from enhanced sports science and medical support, with particular attention to heat acclimatisation given the expected conditions in Tokyo.
Medal Predictions
UK Athletics has publicly projected a target of six to eight medals, which would represent a strong performance by historical standards. Independent analysts suggest that Team GB has realistic medal chances in at least ten events, with gold medal prospects in the women's 800 metres, pole vault, and men's 1500 metres.
