Despite inflation falling to 2.1%, food prices remain significantly higher than they were three years ago, leaving many UK families struggling to balance healthy eating with tight household budgets. Nutrition experts say it is possible to eat well without spending a fortune.

The key principles are planning, buying seasonal produce, cooking from scratch, and reducing food waste. The average UK household throws away £730 worth of food each year, according to WRAP, so cutting waste is the single most effective way to reduce food spending.

Dietitian Priya Patel recommends building meals around affordable staples including oats, lentils, eggs, tinned tomatoes, and frozen vegetables. Frozen vegetables are just as nutritious as fresh and often cheaper, she says. "Batch cooking and freezing portions saves both money and time."

Seasonal eating also makes a significant difference. June and July offer abundant affordable produce including British strawberries, courgettes, broad beans, and new potatoes. Farmers' markets and local greengrocers often offer better value than supermarkets for seasonal produce.

The British Dietetic Association has published a free online guide to eating well on a budget, including weekly meal plans and shopping lists for families of all sizes.
